Theophylline is a medicine in the xanthine group. It acts mainly as a bronchodilator and bronchial smooth muscle relaxant, helping air flow into the lungs.

Bronchial asthma: Prevention and treatment of chronic bronchospasm.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): Relief of breathing difficulty in patients with chronic bronchitis or emphysema.

Respiratory conditions involving narrowed airways: Reduces wheezing, shortness of breath and chest tightness.

How it works: Relaxes bronchial walls to improve airflow. Also helps improve diaphragm contractility and stimulates the respiratory center in the central nervous system.

Strictly for prescription use: Dosing requires careful monitoring because the difference between an effective therapeutic dose and a toxic dose is narrow.

Drug interactions: Interacts with various medicines, including certain antibiotics, anticonvulsants and cimetidine, as well as caffeine and tobacco use.
